Historic Places in Kalamazoo

Protecting Local History

Kalamazoo has seven districts and thirty three sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. It’s part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.

Buildings must retain their historic character and be representative of a specific event or pattern of history on a local, state or national level in order to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Projects that receive federal funding or that require federal permitting must be reviewed to determine if they will adversely affect places on the National Register. The review does not stop the work but identifies impacts and how they can be mitigated.
