Intellectual freedom comprises the bedrock for freedoms of expression, speech, and the press and relates to freedoms of information and the right to privacy.” – MLA Statement of Principle – Intellectual Freedom

Library Bill of Rights

In affiliation with the American Library Association, the KPL affirms all libraries are forums for information and ideas. The Library Bill of Rights guides the services administered by the KPL.

Freedom to Read Statement

This document states that “In a free society individuals are free to determine for themselves what they wish to read,” guaranteed under the Constitution for every individual.

KPL Materials Selection Policy

The Kalamazoo Public Library Board of Trustees adopted the following policy to aid staff and inform the public on selection methods and principles in the current collection. The policy directly relates the collection to the KPL Vision and Core Values.
