Join us in our mission to support the Kalamazoo Public Library
If you love books and book people, the Friends is a wonderful place to volunteer. Opportunities exist for those with varying interests, skills, and schedules.
New volunteers will be asked to sign up for weekly training sessions on our front desk, where you will gain competency on our cash register and credit card reader and learn our approach to customer service. Once you are trained, you may work regularly or occasionally. Once volunteers become familiar with the operation of the bookstore, other kinds of “behind the scenes” jobs may become available. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. To apply, please email: [email protected].
Examples of volunteer activities include the following:
. Staff bookstore front desk (three-hour shifts)
. Place reserves and take special requests
. Handle counter sales, questions, and delivery of online bookstore orders
. Take messages relating to donation appointments
Bag of Books Sales
. Set up for sale
. Refill tables during sale
. Handle sales at cash register
. Clean up
Behind the Scenes Work
. Sort, price, and shelve donated items
. Refresh bookstore inventory by weeding out items that have not sold.
. Select and arrange like items for spotlights and sale carts
. Fulfill customer special requests
. Assist in recruitment and training of volunteers, and maintain volunteer schedule
. List appropriate items on our online bookstore and the external sale site AbeBooks
. Pack and ship items sold on AbeBooks
