The following material is from the 1973 Initial Inventory of Historic Sites and Buildings in Kalamazoo and was made available for use here by the Historic Preservation Coordinator of the City of Kalamazoo. See Introduction to an Initial Inventory for details about how the survey was conducted.

Originally intended as a gatehouse at the entrance drive to the State Hospital grounds. The gate was never constructed, though the drive passed beside the building for several years. In style, the gatehouse belongs to that category popularly called “Carpenter Gothic.” The board-and-batten siding, steep roofs, and “gingerbread” ornament were popular around the country at mid [nineteenth] century.  At present the building is maintained by the State Hospital and serves in part as a museum.
