National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries and library professionals play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.
Millions of people visit their libraries every week. What’s the draw? Everything. During National Library Week, April 6–12, 2025, take time to discover (or rediscover) what draws people in.
Monday, April 7: Right to Read Day, a day for readers, advocates, and library lovers to take action to protect, defend, and celebrate the right to read. Exercise your Right to Read by checking out a challenged or banned book today. For inspiration, read the State of America’s Libraries Report, which includes the list of Top Ten Most Challenged Books of 2023.
Tuesday, April 8: National Library Workers Day, help us celebrate by thanking the dedicated staff at KPL who make our diverse collection of materials, educational and fun programs for all ages, impactful resources, and daily, heartfelt patron support possible.
We also thank our Friends of the Library for their support in enabling us to continue to offer many of the signature community programs you have come to love, like Reading Together and Summer Reading Challenge!
Also, a very special thank you to our facilities and security staff, who work hard daily to ensure your library visit is welcoming and safe!
- Galaxy of Stars: Do you have a favorite KPL staff person? Nominate them for the Galaxy of Stars! The Galaxy of Stars features library workers from across the nation who have been nominated for their stellar work by library users, students, colleagues, faculty, or management! The Galaxy of Stars is updated weekly and sorted by state.
Wednesday, April 9: National Library Outreach Day (formerly National Bookmobile Day), a day to recognize our dedicated Mobile Library staff! The MBL brings the library to community members who may not be able to visit any of our buildings due to physical or financial limitations. Making literacy accessible for all would not be possible without the MBL and other KPL staff who visit schools and other community events weekly to reach Kalamazoo residents where they are at!
Thursday, April 10: Take Action for Libraries Day, a day to rally advocates to support libraries.
- Read about the impact the Executive Order on KPL services and other Michigan Libraries.
- Reach out to your local representatives in support of your library.
- Encourage your friends and family to use their local library if they don’t already and share with them your favorite services to inspire new library lovers.
