Kalamazoo Public Library is Temporarily Suspending Library Services at the Douglass Community Association

Effective Saturday, February 3, 2024

At the end of business on Saturday, February 3, 2024, Kalamazoo Public Library (KPL) will be suspending library services at the Douglass Community Association (DCA) and will resume services at temporary Northside locations as soon as feasible.

The DCA recently adopted new security protocols that require guests to be admitted electronically through locked entrances during open business hours and sign in and out during their visit. The Alma Powell Branch Library is a tenant of the DCA, and therefore patrons are required to adhere to the DCA’s security protocols to access library services.

While Kalamazoo Public Library respects the DCA’s right to determine security protocols for their facilities, requiring library patrons to adhere to the new security protocols to access the library presents a service barrier and infringes on patrons’ right to privacy protected by the Michigan Library Privacy Act (Act 455 of 1982*). Thus, KPL will relocate the Alma Powell Branch Library.

KPL is currently assessing options for temporary locations to provide services to the Alma Powell Branch Library patrons until a permanent location can be determined. Supplemental library services including increasing Mobile Library visits and shifting programming to other KPL locations are being planned.

Kalamazoo Public Library thanks the Douglass Community Association for a strong 39-year partnership and we look forward to future opportunities to continue to serve the Northside community together.

The public will be updated about all Alma Powell Branch Library service changes on KPL’s website as information becomes available. Inquiries can be directed to [email protected].
