About WSQ
Edison Neighborhood of Kalamazoo
Children’s Area
In addition to all of our great books, movies and music, Washington Square provides imaginative play areas for kids and their adults. Our baby and toddler area has safe, developmentally appropriate toys in a cozy space surrounded by books. Perfect for their curious, growing minds. In another location we have a play area for older kids, featuring a kitchen, a dollhouse, a LEGO table, and a farmer’s market along with many other educational toys. You will also always find a table stocked with craft supplies to make your own creations. New to our children’s area is our multiplayer digital PLAYtable with puzzles, matching, trivia, word and math games. Come spend some time with us at Washington Square.

Branch Art
The tile murals above the fireplaces at Washington Square were made by Motawi Tileworks out of Ann Arbor. The mural in the children’s room is based on a piece originally produced by Tropico Potteries of California in 1927. The mural is still included in Motawi’s catalog and has been commissioned several other times since being created for our branch, including by Disneyland.
The mural in the adult wing of the library was originally commissioned for Washington Square in 1997 and, according to the Motawi Tileworks website, “has proven so popular that it has become part of our regular made-to-order production line.”
In 2017, a patron donated a Confrad Kaufman original in honor of the hard-working staff here at the branch. To add to the excitement, Mr. Kaufman delivered the painting himself.
