A Community Play Space

Story Place at Central Library is a community play space for children age birth through 12. It’s open during the library’s open hours, except during posted program times. Come in to play with the toys and make new friends.

Ask the librarian for a sticker when you help to clean up!

Musical Instruments

KPL is providing access to tools of making music for children and families in the Children’s Room and our other locations. Instruments are provided by through a grant from Friends of Kalamazoo Public Library.

Keyboard
Music belongs to everyone, so everyone at the public library now has access to a piano! Purchased Spring 2018, the keyboard is a public access digital piano with a variety of different voices.

The Cajon
The cajon (Portuguese for box) was the first musical instrument for the Children’s Room purchased with funds from Friends of the Library. Built by local drum maker Gerren Young (Generation Custom Drums), the cajon has a rich cultural history that is tied into resistance to oppression.

Ukuleles
In Spring of 2017, ukuleles were purchased for every KPL location with support from Friends of the Library. Tuned in an open tuning (G6 chord) they make music even more accessible for children and families. They are used in storytime, sometimes, and can be found in the Children’s areas at KPL locations.
