Summary

Marius: Marius, son of César the owner of a cafe, is drawn to the sea, filled with dreams of faraway lands. He loves Fanny, but even this love is not as strong as his wanderlust. Fanny turns him loose to follow his dream and marries Panisse, a rich widower.

Fanny: Fanny is comforted by Marius' own father as the deserted girl is about to bear her lover's child.

Cesar: Fanny's son Cesar is told his real father is not Fanny's husband but rather Marius. The young man sets out to find his father and they are finally united after 20 years.
