Summary
Our energy system is on the threshold of a fundamental change. Fifty years ago the foundations of our current energy supply were laid, and now the time has come to set the course for the next 50 years. By 2050, our yearly energy requirements will have more than doubled as more and more people use more and more fuel. Until late in the 19th century our energy needs were largely supplied by the sun, water, and biomass. They are also the way of the future. In light of the massive demand for energy, extremely efficient methods of energy production are required. Scientists are working around the clock to develop sustainable technologies that can operate on a tenth of current energy requirements and which, it's hoped, will soon replace fossil fuels. The documentary, The Dawn of a New Era: Energy 2050, follows a number of these exciting projects and examines issues such as the rise of China, the increase in blackouts, and intelligent supply networks of the future.
