Red Terror in Kalamazoo
The Shakespeare Strike of 1948
The Shakespeare Company, a leading manufacturer and supplier of fishing equipment and other sporting goods, was founded in Kalamazoo in 1897. Local historian Tom Dietz recounts the surprising story of the 1948 Shakespeare Company workers strike. Dietz explains how the postwar Red Scare and a raid by some Detroit union members on the company offices helped turn a simple strike for higher wages into a congressional investigation.
