Jacqueline Woodson Lecture

Jacqueline Woodson Lecture - February 16th, 2021

“What will Jacqueline Woodson’s legacy be both on children’s literature and on the worlds of the people who get to read her words, step into her stories, and learn about themselves and others through the sensitive and gorgeous words that she puts onto the page? As someone who studies children’s literature, I’ve long been an adult who finds books written with a children’s audience in mind powerful and instructive, and indeed, not just for children. As Woodson has shown her readers that she is a master of multiple genres, and that she can speak to multiple audiences, her impact continues to grow and shape readers of all ages. Looking across a swath of her stories, I will consider central themes and ideas that have persisted and engaged readers for decades.” — Jill Hermann-Wilmarth

Jill M. Hermann-Wilmarth, a former elementary school teacher, is a professor of social foundations in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Educational Studies at Western Michigan University. Her main area of research is LGBTQ-inclusive English Language Arts instruction, which she has been examining for over a decade and a half by theorizing children’s literature, examining her own instruction in her teacher education classroom, and by co-teaching with both early and upper elementary school teachers in the Midwest. Her work can be found in the Journal of Literacy Research, Language Arts, and Journal of Language and Literacy Education, among other places. She is the co-author of Reading the Rainbow: LGBTQ-Inclusive Literacy Instruction in the Elementary Classroom.
