POW Neighborhood

Northside of Kalamazoo

Alma Powell Branch is located in the Douglass Community Association on the historical Northside of Kalamazoo. The neighborhood has gone through many changes but still remains to be predominantly African American. The community greatly relies on a strong presence from the local churches and local nonprofits. There’s a unique commitment from The Northside Ministerial Alliance, The Deacons Conference and Northside Association for Community Development; to provide social services to the underserved. These agencies as well as the Douglass Community Association provide many much-needed resources. Within the walls of the Douglass there is a Diaper giveaway provided by St Luke’s Diaper Bank from a grant funded by United Way, The Boys and Girls Club, Loaves and Fishes, Michigan Works, Helen Fox GospelMetropolitan Kalamazoo Branch N.A.A.C.P., Momentum through Urban Alliance (a grant funded program which is designed to provide training and skills for employment re-entry) and Rootead, which is offers Doulas, dance instructions and yoga.

The Alma Powell Branch is fortunate to be in the midst of these activities and services to offer programs that allows the community to explore, discover and engage.
