Summary

This documentary discusses the debate over the spread of slavery and Lincoln's place in that debate. It describes the preparations for the August 1856 rally in Kalamazoo in support of Republican presidential candidate John C. Fremont and how Lincoln came to be one of the speakers. It analyzes the content of the speech and explains that it was a precursor to his "house divided" speech. Using the actual transcript of the speech made by a newspaper reporter, diaries from people who witnessed the speech, and newspaper accounts, this program brings to life a very exciting but troubled time in our nation's history.
