Summary

"A number of years ago, I began to research the Root family, specifically Elijah Root, Jr. and his wife Millicent Stone Root who settled in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. This serach took me to many institutions and to many individuals from around the Midwest and the Northeast United States. Elijah's ancestry dates back to 1637 when the first Roots arrived from England. I have done a great deal of research with insitutions that are close to where I live; however this project requred that I contact institutions further away specifically those in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York. The project took me a little over five years. I am happy to report that my work is now in print and I am happy to be able to share a copy with you. I want to tell you how much I appreciate the help you and your institution gave me with this project. Before I started this research, I knew very little about the Root family who moved to Portage Township in the early 1830s. Over the years, I learned so much not only about Elijah and Millicent but also many members of their extended family including those ancestors living out east. This publication is a testament to their contributions to their country and their community."--letter from John Marsh to Kalamazoo Public Library.
