Summary

Rough Breathing is a substantial selection from thirty years of procedurally and formally inventive writing from poet, editor and art critic, Harry Gilonis. A lively, lyrical and clever collection, the poems often cross the boundaries between original and translated works in a variety of intriguing and innovative ways, including versions of the works of ancient and modern poets. Allusiveness is integral to the core of these poems which are formally and linguistically compact, intense and succinct, rigorous and precise - even demanding, yet light and very readable. Many of the poems have strong topographical connections to landscape, mostly in the British Isles, including the Derbyshire 'White Peak', the Dorset coast, Orkney, several islands in the Outer Hebrides, the southern Welsh borderland and the Republic of Ireland. Gilonis has authored dozens of books and booklets published by numerous presses nationwide for over thirty years and this is the first time his work has been gathered as a Selection.
