Hoopla Service Update

Beginning March 1, 2025

hoopla iconKPL is proud to offer Hoopla and has enjoyed watching it grow over the years. KPL card holders who borrow eBooks, eAudiobooks, comics, videos, and music on Hoopla will notice a change on the platform starting March 1, 2025. Due to rising usage and associated costs, the number of monthly checkouts per user will decrease from 15 to 10. This decision was made to ensure that this popular service remains sustainable within the library’s budget.

How Does Hoopla Work?

Libraries offering Hoopla are charged a fee for each title checked out on the platform, and the cost for those materials varies based on item type, averaging approximately $2.00 per checkout. eAudiobooks, which are consistently the most popular with our patrons, can cost as much as $3.99 per checkout.

Since the beginning of 2020, the number of KPL patrons actively borrowing titles through Hoopla has nearly doubled. We have historically relied on monthly and daily spending caps to maintain a sustainable budget, but as use continues to increase, we have found that daily spending caps are being reached earlier and earlier in the day, which means fewer patrons have access to materials.

Hoopla BingePasses
BingePasses on Hoopla provide seven days of unlimited access to large collections of streaming video content based around specific topics for the cost of a single checkout. Current examples include: The Great Courses, Hallmark+, Retro Crush (Anime), and Pokémon. More are added all the time, so check back frequently!

Hoopla Bonus Borrows
During the last seven days of each month, Hoopla provides unlimited access to an ever-changing lineup of content across all item types that do not count against your 10 monthly checkouts. Run out of checkouts early? Bonus Borrows have your back–and your book!

Libby, Kanopy, and Freegal

Become a digital content connoisseur by getting on board with all of KPL’s digital platforms. All are available for free on the App Store & Google Play Store. Save your Hoopla checkouts for things you can’t find anywhere else!

  • Libby is your ticket to an absolutely massive collection of eBooks, eAudiobooks, and more than 4,000 digital magazines. Libby provides unparalleled access to new and popular titles as well as old favorites. Not seeing what you’re looking for? Ask if we can pick it up.
  • Kanopy is loaded with amazing streaming video options, including new and popular titles, arthouse cinema, documentaries, and unlimited, responsibly sourced kids’ content. Kanopy not available on your smart TV? Load Kanopy on your phone or tablet and use Apple Airplay or Chromecast to send it wirelessly to your TV. You can also connect a laptop to your TV via HDMI and navigate to Kanopy.com.
  • Freegal provides access to 18 million songs across more than 1 million albums. Stream for five hours per week and download five MP3s per week that are yours to keep forever. They’re free & legal (get it?)
