Bookstore News Sept. 29 - Oct 2
Banned Books Week began last Saturday and continues through to the end of this week. Banned Books Week is sponsored by the American Library Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the Association of American Publishers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and the National Association of College Stores. According to the Banned Books Week Organization, Banned Books Week is a national celebration of the freedom to read. The celebration began in 1982 in response to a sudden increase in challenges to books occurring in libraries, schools and bookstores. In addition to celebrating freedom of speech, the sponsors of BBW want to encourage people to consider the ramifications of censorship.
We put together a small selection of the more than 1000 books that have been challenged since 1982. I promise you some of these titles will surprise you. Come in and look it over.
Also in the spotlight this week: African American Studies.
