We are a Fine-Free Library
No more fines for overdue materials
Kalamazoo Public Library constantly strives to identify ways to increase library access and improve services for everyone in our community. That is why on January 1, 2020 KPL joined thousands of libraries across the country by going fine-free.
Why
- It’s good for Kalamazoo. Our community thrives when everyone has equal access to the services, materials and programs they need to pursue their educational, career, family and life goals. We hope that by removing this financial barrier, we can welcome back many of our patrons who have had their access blocked due to fines, as well as introduce new patrons to everything we have to offer.
- Late fines are not effective. We know from experience that fines do not impact return rates but do contribute to a loss of materials. Simply, those who can afford to pay the fines, pay them. Those who can’t afford the fines don’t return and often keep the materials.
- It’s fiscally responsible. Revenue attributed to fines has fallen steadily in the last five years and represents less than 0.5% of the library’s operating revenue.
Fine-free @KPL means:
- you will no longer receive a daily fine on overdue materials
- you are still responsible for returning materials on time. We want them back please!
- you will receive gentle reminders to return your items. (see the Return Notice Schedule below)
- your account will be blocked if materials are overdue more than 10 days. You will be unblocked as soon as you return them.
- you will be billed the replacement cost for any items that are damaged or overdue by 30 days. Accounts owing more than $30 will be sent to collections if the materials are not returned or paid for after 21 days from the billing date. This information is NOT reported to credit bureaus.
