Artists in Action – Featuring James Palmore

Wed, October 9 @ 2:00 pm4:00 pm

| Recurring Event (See all)

In conjunction with the traveling exhibition, Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio in Harlem, The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is featuring Where We Stand: Black Artists in Southwest Michigan, an exhibition to celebrate local black artists. KPL has partnered with the KIA to feature one of the exhibiting artists at each KPL location.

The spotlight artist will work each day on a special piece that will be featured at the December Art Hop. Patrons will have the special opportunity to interact with an artist Monday through Friday, create art in the style of the artist, and participate in a very special program facilitated by the artist.

The October Featured Artist is James C. Palmore who grew up in Kalamazoo’s Eastside neighborhood and works out of a studio in his childhood home on East Michigan Avenue. After serving in Germany as a medic during the Vietnam War, Palmore moved back to Kalamazoo and eventually became the Youth Program Coordinator at the City of Kalamazoo Parks & Recreation Department for 25 years. He was a founding board member of the Black Civic Theater, and, with Bertha Barbee McNeil, a member of the Velvelettes, Lois Jackson, and Gayle Sydnor, he helped found the Black Arts and Cultural Center. Palmore has been awarded a Community Medal of Arts by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo. Palmore’s large-scale portrait Chief received the Peoples’ Choice Award in the 2018 West Michigan Area Show.

Come to the Eastwood Branch and watch James Palmore in action!

There will also be a special program featuring James Palmore on Monday, October 7, 5 pm at the Eastwood Branch. Registration required.
