African American Quilt Display

Wed, May 10, 2023Fri, June 30, 2023 | OPEN HOURS

African American Quilt Display

May 10 through June, Bette Boulding and Paralee Harris, two of Kalamazoo’s favorite quilt makers, will have their African American quilts on display in Eastwood’s community room.

Bette Jones Boulding began quilting in 1992. She enjoyed recycling denim jeans to piece together a quilt for her son. Often Bette is asked to create a quilt pattern to tell a person’s life story out of their t-shirts and sometimes this is challenging. Bette has an artistic eye for beautiful colors of fabric as she creates an attractive colorful functional quilt with shirts and pieces of fabric. She has given 200+ quilts to nursing homes, family members, and friends. Bette has instructed several individuals in the art of quilting over the years! During her teaching year in middle school, Bette had a quilting project for her students to each complete. In addition to that, she instructed Junior Girls in completing a quilting project.

Paralee Harris has been quilting since 2005, she was taught by her sister Juanita Hickman-Johnson who is a master quilter. The art of quilting gives Paralee great peace and joy as she goes through the process of creating an amazing quilt. She loves selecting beautiful quilt patterns, creating an amazing quilt, then machine stitching her quilts together. Paralee often has been very generous of blessing her family and friends with her beautiful quilts. She loves blessing individuals with gorgeous quilts as a ministry. Each quilt is customized and etched with an embroidery label with a prophetic word also a scripture designed is added with the individual in mind.

Please check Eastwood’s open hours and stop by for a viewing of Bette’s and Paralee’s famous quilts.
