2021 Top 10 Most Challenged Books

The American Library Association (ALA) reported that in 2021 there was “an unprecedented number of attempts to ban books.” ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 729 challenges to library, school, and university materials, resulting in more than 1597 individual book challenges or removals. For comparison, the number of books challenged or banned in 2020 was around 273, which was a drop from 2019’s 377 challenges. These titles are the top 10 most frequently challenged books of 2021.
