Summary

After reading Dash's journal from the previous summer-the one he swears he didn't write, because he wasn't at Black Sand Beach- the kids still don't know what really happened to Dash that made him lose his memory. But they have bigger things to worry about. Like the face-eating monster they trapped out in the woods. Jumping back in time to 1994, the ghost girls that Dash befriended in his journal are alive and well. Their dad has brought them to Black Sand Beach to search for a monster. The one that's now escaped, and terrorizing Black Sand Beach again.

Told in alternating timelines, Dash and his friends try to use the Darkness to capture the monster they accidentally freed, while in 1994 sisters Mabel and Kasey come face-to-face with the shapeshifting creature their father is hunting.
