Summary
In 1948 Chile, poet and Communist Senator Pablo Neruda suffers political persecution after criticizing President Gabriel Gonzalez Videla's brutal anti-communist repression in a speech in the National Congress. This leads to a manhunt for his arrest, led by the facist Police Prefect Oscar Peluchonneau, inspiring Neruda to write his epic collection of poems, Canto General. As the legend of the poet hounded by the policeman grows, artists led by Pablo Picasso clamor for Neruda's freedom. Neruda plays with the inspector, leaving clues designed to make their game of cat-and-mouse more dangerous and intimate.
