Summary

The Young Pope tells the fictional story of Lenny Belardo, a.k.a. Pius XIII, the first-ever American Pope and the youngest elected by the College of Cardinals. Upon his election, Pius XIII immediately eschews the counsel of Vatican elders and enlists the woman who raised him, Sister Mary, to be his chief confidante. Throughout the series, Lenny's papacy is characterized by his strict adherence to Catholic dogma, belied by flights of fancy and crises of faith. The Young Pope paints a portrait of a mysterious, complicated man whose audacity, independence, and arch-conservatism wreak havoc within the Vatican.
