Summary
Downtown 81 sometimes feels ike a documentary, but it's really a document. The film captures the rare essence of a certain time and place--New York City 1981--in all its hip, downtown, wasted post-punk glory. Starring Jean-Michel Basquiat as a character not unlike his real self, wandering in and out of a dreamlike fractured art and music scene, the film follows his strange encounters with real-life characters playing themselves.
