Summary
Building character is the most important matter in life. Little matters the works that a man can leave in the world; your true success is measured by what you have built over the years into your very being. True character must be built according to divine standards. The life of each man is a plan of God. There is a divine purpose regarding it that we must fulfill. In the Scriptures we find the patterns for all parts of the character, not only for its large and prominent elements, but also for its minutest features, the delicate lines and nuances of its ornamentation. The commandments, the beatitudes, all the precepts of Christ, the ethical teachings of the apostles, show us the model according to which we must model our character. It is a great thing for us to have an elevated thought of life, and always seek to reach it. Michelangelo said: "Nothing makes the soul so pure, so religious, as the effort to create something perfect, because God is perfection, and whoever strives for it, strives for something that is similar to God." The very search makes us nobler, holier, purer, stronger. We always grow towards what we long for. Many searches are not rewarded. Men look for gold and do not find it. They try to achieve happiness, but the vision gets further and further away as they move towards it. The pursuit of true nobility is one that is rewarded. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied," is the very word of our Lord. Yearning for spiritual good will never be in vain. And the incessant longing, with the sincere search for the good, elevates life to the permanent realization of what is persistently sought.
