Depicted through letters, Lady Susan tells the story of the titular character as she seeks husbands for herself and her daughter while maintaining a clandestine relationship with a married man. It is believed that Austen wrote Lady Susan in 1794, although it was not published until 1871, long after Austen's death in 1817.
