Margean Gladysz: “A Spy on the Bus”

Friends of Kalamazoo Public Library presented a spirited talk by author Margean Gladysz about her fascinating memoir “A Spy on the Bus” at Central Library, April 14, 2012. PBS NewsHour host Jim Lehrer wrote in his review "The will never be another book like this. There simply could not be another Margean Gladysz, who as a young woman was paid by Greyhound, Trailways and other companies to ride buses thousands of miles all over the country in the 1940's. She was there to spot and report back on drunk, stealing, reckless and nutty bus drivers who should be fired. And it's all in her diary-like letters that she sent home at the time. 'A Spy on the Bus' is a treat and a half. I promise."

Luis Alberto Urrea in Kalamazoo

Featured author Luis Alberto Urrea visited Kalamazoo for two days in March 2012 as part of Kalamazoo Public Library's Reading Together program. Presented here are highlights of the three programs Urrea took part in; Conversación con Luis Urrea, a conversation in Spanish at El Sol Elementary School (Kalamazoo Public Schools' bilingual school); and a public presentation entitled "Cross Cultural Experiences" at Kalamazoo Central High School Auditorium later the same evening. After a brief visit to Kalamazoo Public Library the following morning, Urrea discussed his craft as a dual-culture writer from "A Writer's Perspective" in the Light Fine Arts Building at Kalamazoo College. Urrea then briefly shared for our camera his thoughts about Reading Together and his experience in Kalamazoo.
