Nancy Davis Smith

I have been the Lead Librarian at Washington Square Branch Library since 1988. Prior to that I worked at the Central Library in various departments including reference, teen and children’s. I grew up in Manchester, Michigan a small town in the Ann Arbor area. When I came to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University for my undergraduate and graduate degrees, little did I know I would stay this long! Having grown up in a small town makes working at Washington Square Branch the perfect fit for me. I love working in a setting where I know the people, their families and their reading interests. My first KPL position was at this very branch. I did work at the Central Library for a number of years but decided to return to branch work. I spend a major portion of my time selecting books, movies and CD’s for our neighborhood library. I try to look at all the new children’s and teen books so I can not only give good readers advisory to this special group of readers but to also add to the materials I use for programs. You will see me doing story times for babies, preschoolers and head start classes. Classes from the neighboring schools also visit for story times and we have great summer reading programs for all ages. I can’t imagine what other job I would enjoy as much as being the Librarian at Washington Square Branch Library.

I have been very involved with my daughter’s school and her sport activities. She will be entering college in the fall. My husband and I look forward to a busy summer and fall.
