I began working for KPL in 1995, just months after graduating from Michigan State University with a B.A. in English. Previous years of experience in music, video, and book stores made for an easy transition into my role as an assistant at our Central branch’s AV and circulation desks. As a member of several Michigan-based rock ’n’ roll bands, my stage experience led to further responsibilities coordinating AV equipment needs in KPL’s VanDeusen auditorium.
Music and movies have always played a significant role in my life – I’ve been a record collector (or, to use Billy Wilder’s term, an “accumulator”) since elementary school days, and an avid film buff since middle school (pre-video boom, I would have to seek out films of interest at midnight showings, specialty theaters such as Le Bijou, and by combing the pages of TV Guide for obscure movie listings). Piano, organ, bass guitar, and trombone are among the instruments I’ve played in various bands – I’ve also been known to pass shouting off as “singing”.
I reside in Kalamazoo with my wonderful family. We enjoy the many facets of Kalamazoo’s arts community, the diversity and friendliness of the city’s denizens, and the beauty of West Michigan in all its seasons. It’s my wish that I can give as much to the community as it gives to me – hopefully, my work at KPL is a substantial part of my contribution.
