I came to Kalamazoo eight years ago to attend WMU. Little did I know back then that I would stay here this long, let alone that I would end up working for the Library! See, back home there wasn’t a public library system like the one we have here and every time I needed help with school projects and homework I would have to visit the Catholic University to use their library. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico a small, beautiful island floating quietly in the gracious waters of the Caribbean. As you can imagine coming here all by myself was something of a shock at first but it turned out to be an amazing adventure as well and if I had to do it all over again I most definitively would!
Here at the Library I divide my working time between the Washington Square branch and the Eastwood branch. My main areas of work include Spanish translations, helping the Library reach out to Kalamazoo’s growing Hispanic community and working at the circulation desk. I also help with the computer classes in Spanish and with the development of our Spanish collection (books, cds and movies in Spanish). Additionally, I belong to the library’s Spanish and diversity committees which allows me to participate in a great variety of community events and meet a lot of wonderful people. I truly love working at the library!

Yo vine a Kalamazoo hace 8 años para estudiar en WMU. ¡Nunca me imaginé que me quedaría aquí por tanto tiempo ni mucho menos que acabaría trabajando en la Biblioteca! De donde yo vengo no teníamos ningún tipo de biblioteca pública así que si necesitaba ayuda con mi tarea o con algún proyecto especial mi única solución era ir a la biblioteca de la Universidad Católica. Nací y crecí en Puerto Rico, una pequeña y hermosa isla bañada por las preciosísimas aguas del Mar Caribe. Como se podrán imaginar venirme a vivir para acá completamente solo no fue fácil pero tengo que aceptar que ha sido una aventura maravillosa y que no cambiaría esta experiencia por nada.
Mis horas de trabajo para la Biblioteca están divididas entre las sucursales de Eastwood y Washington Square. Como empleado bilingüe yo trabajo con las traducciones al español, ayudando a la Biblioteca a mejorar los servicios que ofrece a la comunidad Hispana en Kalamazoo y ayudando en el escritorio de circulación. También ayudo con las clases de computación en español y con la compra de libros, cds y películas en español. Además pertenezco a los comités de Español y de Diversidad en la Biblioteca, lo que me da la oportunidad de participar en una gran variedad de eventos de la comunidad y de conocer a muchas personas maravillosas. ¡Me encanta trabajar en la Biblioteca!
