Tim O'Brien in Kalamazoo
Comments and afterthoughts...
27 March 2006
"I send a heartfelt shout of thanks to the
people of Kalamazoo for a wonderful visit. Your
generosity and kindness meant the world to me, and
I'm deeply grateful. Most often, writers send their
books off into a kind of black hole, rarely meeting
their readers, but in this case I had the great
pleasure of attaching faces and personalities to at
least some of those who have read The Things They
Carried. What a terrific human experience."

After the Air Zoo event, Tim said he had never
been to an event where there were so many veterans
and was impressed with our partnership with the Air
Zoo.
After the high school event Tim said "Now I
know what John Balaban was talking about!" (If
you remember John was here for the opening of the
Smithsonian Exhibit at the Air Zoo) .... Tim and
John are friends and "ran into" each other
in Austin, TX. Upon learning that Tim was coming to
Kazoo, John said, "You'll have such a good
time!"
Tim expressed that we had :
-
-an outstanding event
-
-an incredibly organized
program
-
-a fantastic community
-
-great high school
students
-
-a wonderful library
-
-provided him with an
"incredible visit."
At the luncheon for Steering Committee Members
and Funding Organizations, Tim said were it not for
the extremely cold (HE thought it was bitter cold on
Tuesday) he would really consider moving to
Kalamazoo.
Comments from patrons...

"You
all have done such a fantastic job
with this program and the crowd at
last night's event is only a physical
representation of your work. I'm sure
there are many more hearts out there
who have been as deeply moved.
Congratulations!"

|
"Fabulous
job! What a day. WOW."
|
|
"You must
be pleased with how things went last
night. I enjoyed his talk and it
seemed like those around us did also."
|
|
"Just
wanted to let you know how much I
enjoyed Tim O'Brien's presentation
last night... terrific program!"
|
|
"Anyone
who has served as a representative of
me and my country, to protect my
freedom, is worthy of my undying
gratitude. And I think that Viet Nam
vets won't be at peace until they are
shown some appreciation for their
personal sacrifice - that's why I
think that this year's Reading
Together program is so wonderful -
hopefully helping in
"healing" some of the
psychological wounds of war
(especially THAT war)."
|
|
"I was in
the top of the balcony last night.
What a crowd! Tim's speech was
enthralling. And the whole program was
impressive."
|
|
[from a teacher
at Comstock High school] "Thank
you so much for making it possible for
us to come to this. Our kids loved it.
I've gotten nothing but great
feedback. Everything went smoothly and
it was enjoyed by all."
