Your Story: Mildred Hawkins

“Reading is a core part of the family’s life—even for Dad”

A full-time mom, Mildred Hawkins’ days are filled tending to family needs. But she still finds time for reading, and she has instilled a love of books and a priority of reading in her three children, Mia, 5, W.K.IV, 12, and Jadon, 17. “Some days when I’m cooking I like to get a book on CD so I’m able to keep up. Mildred says, to save time, she reserves books from the children’s room computer while Mia is there exploring. Reading is a core part of the family’s life—even for Dad, W.K. III. “At the end of the day he’s tired. When he tries to sit down with a book he falls asleep. I told him about the wonderful selection of audio books,” Mildred says. “Now, he listens to and from work and I read the same book. It gives us something to talk about. It works out wonderfully.”
