Like many families, KPL’s educational resources benefit the Hollins children: Edward, 20, a WMU student, and daughters Shamiel, 6, Syann, 5, and Sasha, 2. But for Sonya, a work-from-home freelance writer/editor/writing-consultant mom, the Central Library serves as office, research center, law resource, computer lab, a place to meet clients… “I do a lot of work with self publishers, so if people want to learn more about copy rights, we get information from the Law Library. Or, we research business names for people starting businesses,” Sonya says.
“I also work with people who are writing about family history or about Kalamazoo history, so we use the History Room and its resources, too.” Deeper research into specialty topics sometimes takes Sonya to the branches. Powell Library, she says, offers extensive African American history. Feature stories, press releases, editing, consulting… KPL helps Sonya with every aspect of her business.
