Current board president Cheryl M. TenBrink was first elected
to the Board of Trustees in May 2007. She was re-elected
in May of 2011. However, her association with Kalamazoo Public
Library started when she worked as a page in the Bookmobile Department at
the age of fourteen. Her mother, Eleanor Whitman, was a Bookmobile libarian at
the time. While in college, she worked at KPL as a student assistant and served
as switchboard operator.
After receiving her Bachelor's degree and
Master's degree in Library Science from Western
Michigan University, Cheryl became a school librarian in Kalamazoo
Public Schools for 30 years, serving at both the elementary and secondary
levels. She retired in June 2007.
Cheryl and her husband Burt have two
sons, Carl who is in the U.S. Army and Cory, both are married with families.
They love visiting their six grandchildren who live in Texas, North Carolina,
and Germany.
Cheryl enjoys reading
for pleasure, going to water exercise class and spending time renewing
friendships. She has lived in Kalamazoo over 55 years.
She is an active
volunteer in her community. She has been a library volunteer for four years at
Woods Lake Elementary School. She volunteers at the Kalamazoo
Education Association office as needed several times during the school
year. Cheryl volunteers and walks in the Susan
G. Koman "Walk for the Cure." She has been an active member of Epsilon
Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, a fraternity of professional
educators for 25 years and has held many positions of leadership. In May of
2011 she was named "Chapter Woman of Distinction."
Cheryl loves to watch
Western Michigan University sporting events - especially football, but also
Men's basketball and Women's basketball and volleyball. GO
