Another Picoult Fan

Did you ever discover a book that you loved by an author you haven’t read, and then were delighted to learn that this author has written two dozen books? That’s how I felt when I first read Jodi Picoult, about whom the Financial Times declared “It’s hard to exaggerate how well Picoult writes.” I’m rationing myself to one or two of Picoult’s books a month so I don’t go through them too fast – I’m halfway through her body of work and hoping she keeps writing for years to come!

Right now, I’m reading her absorbing second novel, Harvesting the Heart, which explores the question can you be a good mother if your own mother wasn’t present during your childhood? Paige O’Toole’s mother abandoned her husband and daughter when Paige was only five. Paige struggles with this loss, and her own and her father’s grief; she despairs of ever finding and deserving love. When she marries impetuously at 18, becomes pregnant and has Max, Paige finds herself overcome by the demands of having a family, and runs away—just like her mother.

“Jodi Picoult explores the fragile ground of ambivalent motherhood in her lush second novel. This story belongs to… the lucky reader.”
