Check Out a Free One-Day Pass
Michigan Recreation and Park Association, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources have teamed up to offer the MI Big Green Gym initiative (formerly Park & Read), which allows Kalamazoo Public Library resident cardholders to “check-out” a free one-day pass that waives the Recreation Passport entry fee into any of Michigan’s 101 state parks and recreation areas this summer - many offering free Recreation 101 programs.
Request a pass at any KPL location
Passes are valid for seven days after check-out and are good for one free day admission to any state park or recreation area, the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing, or the KLR Splashpad in Oxford Township, a universally accessible facility that is a hit with kids of all ages and abilities. Sorry, MI Big Green Gym Passes are not eligible to be placed on reserve and they are not renewable.
The program is designed to promote overall well-being and a healthy lifestyle through use of participating state and local parks, and recreation facilities. Simple concept, big idea. Michigan has some of the country’s premier parks, which, along with local recreation departments, provide unique and fun ways to stay active and spend time with family and community.
Michigan really is a big green gym - with endless opportunities to get active.
