In the course of their work at KPL, staff members may have access to confidential or proprietary information regarding KPL, its patrons, or its staff. All staff members are responsible for the internal security and use of such information. Staff members may not reveal or divulge any such information and such information is to be used only in the performance of staff duties. Examples include patron registration information, specific patron inquiries, personal information about staff members, social security numbers.
If a staff member is approached to provide information inappropriately, he/she must refuse to release the requested information and immediately notify his/her supervisor. If a staff member is uncertain as to the confidentiality of information, he/she should consult with his/her supervisor.
It is a very serious offense for a staff member to access, release, or use for personal purposes, confidential information obtained in the course of employment. A violation of this policy will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination, as outlined in the negotiated agreements and/or in staff handbooks.
